EM-TECH Seminar Series #1 - Bioinformatics

The first seminar was about Bioinformatics with Neil Arvin Bretaña. Bioinformatics was defined as the a multi-disciplinary field which refers to the application of computational techniques in order to organize, process, and analyze biological data. During the start of the seminar, I actually didn't see any connection of the topic to an emerging technology because I saw it more of as an emerging field of Biology. The discussion included terms or concepts that is used in Bioinformatics and researches that were done for this field in Biology. It was also mentioned that this field is being developed in order to discover the different functions of biological materials and on how they work together. The importance on technology for this topic was only discussed during the latter part of the seminar. They mentioned that the technology is important on how it is needed to aid in the organization, storage, and analysis of biological data and to develop web applications and software for offering biological data and tools to the scientific community.
I actually really didn't get a lot of concepts on technology during this seminar because it was more on the Biology side as I have said. And I am still doubtful if this can be considered as an emerging technology because throughout the whole discussion, my thoughts were that it was an emerging field that uses technology but it isn't really an emerging technology. Even though I have said all this, I have actually learned a lot of ideas on Biology and how people work around it in order to discover connections between biological materials.
